Bellano Gorge: one of the most spectacular natural wonders on Lake Como

A journey into the heart of the rock

The Bellano Gorge can be explored via a network of suspended walkways anchored directly to the canyon walls. The route follows the Pioverna Stream through waterfalls, giant potholes, deep ravines and narrow passages sculpted by the continuous flow of water.

The sound of cascading water, the cool humidity of the rock and the lush vegetation create an almost magical atmosphere that has inspired writers, artists and local legends for centuries. Today, the walkway has been extended to reach the impressive waterfall at the upper end of the canyon, offering visitors even more breathtaking views.

The legend of the Ca’ del Diavol

At the entrance to the gorge stands one of Lake Como’s most intriguing landmarks: Ca’ del Diavol (“The Devil’s House”), a distinctive pentagonal tower overlooking the Pioverna Stream.

Its unusual name comes from the zodiac symbols and mythological frescoes decorating its upper floor, as well as the ancient legends that tell of mysterious rituals and supernatural gatherings. Today, the building houses a multimedia exhibition dedicated to the history of Bellano and its surrounding area, making it the perfect complement to a visit to the gorge.

A destination for everyone

One of the Bellano Gorge’s greatest strengths is its accessibility. The route is relatively short and easy to follow, making it suitable for visitors of all ages, including families with children and anyone looking for a leisurely outdoor experience.

Visitors should note that the path includes stairs and narrow sections, making it unsuitable for strollers. Dogs, however, are welcome along the route.

What to see nearby

The visit can easily be extended by spending a few hours exploring Bellano, one of the most authentic villages on Lake Como.

Take time to stroll through its charming historic centre, with its cobbled streets, Piazza San Giorgio and its beautiful Romanesque church, the lakeside promenade and the marina, where ferries depart for Varenna, Bellagio and Menaggio.

Bellano is also a destination for art lovers thanks to BAC – Bellano Arte Cultura, a cultural project that celebrates the village’s artistic and historical heritage through museums, exhibition spaces and cultural events. Just a short walk from the Bellano Gorge is the Giancarlo Vitali Museum, dedicated to one of Italy’s most important twentieth-century painters, while the charming Church of San Nicolao regularly hosts temporary exhibitions and art displays. A visit to the Bellano Gorge can therefore become a full day dedicated to discovering the area’s nature, art and history.

Just a few minutes away by car are Varenna, home to Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi, and Dervio, one of Lake Como’s most popular destinations for water sports.

Visitor information

The Bellano Gorge is open year-round, with opening hours varying according to the season. The last admission is 20 minutes before closing time. Tickets can be purchased online or at the ticket office, while advance booking is recommended for groups and guided tours.
