There is a time of year when Lake Como begins to reveal a different side of itself. Summer slowly gives way to autumn, the days become quieter, and the landscape takes on completely new colours and atmospheres.
September and October are perfect for those who want to discover the lake away from the pace of the high season, without giving up the experiences that make it such a unique destination.
1. A touch of summer in September
Autumn on Lake Como doesn’t arrive overnight. In September, temperatures are generally still pleasant and much of life around the lake continues outdoors.
Lunch on a terrace, an aperitivo by the water or a day out on the lake are all ways to hold on to that summer feeling for a little longer, but at a much more relaxed pace.
2. The magic of autumn light
Autumn also changes the way the lake looks. The lower sun creates a softer, warmer light, particularly beautiful in the morning and late afternoon.
It is the perfect season for photography, but also simply for stopping along the Malgrate lakeside promenade and watching Lecco and the surrounding mountains reflected in the water.
3. A landscape changing colour
October brings something summer simply can’t offer: autumn foliage. The forests surrounding the lake gradually turn shades of yellow, orange and red, creating a striking contrast with the blue water and mountains.
And you don’t necessarily need to plan a hike to enjoy it. Driving through the area, walking through the gardens of the historic villas or taking a boat trip across the lake are all wonderful ways to experience the changing season.

After the busiest months of summer, September and October offer the opportunity to experience many of Lake Como’s towns and villages at a gentler pace. There is more time to stop and explore, wander without a strict schedule or enjoy a long lunch overlooking the water.
And perhaps this is one of the greatest pleasures of autumn: having more time for the lake.
5. A season of art and culture
Autumn certainly doesn’t mean that life around the lake comes to a stop. On the contrary, September and October bring events dedicated to art, design, music, culture and local traditions.
The historic villas also continue to host seasonal events. From 2 October to 8 November 2026, for example, Villa Carlotta hosts its Autumn Festival, celebrating the park and the surrounding landscape during one of the most beautiful times of the year.
6. Autumn flavours at the table
As the first cooler days arrive, the flavours on the table begin to change too. Mushrooms, chestnuts, polenta, cheeses and richer seasonal dishes join lake fish and other local specialities.
In Malgrate, dinner at Lisander Restaurant or a more informal meal at Da Giovannino Bistrot can become the perfect ending to a day spent discovering the lake.
7. The perfect time to stay a little longer
Perhaps this is the most beautiful difference compared with summer. In autumn, Lake Como becomes less about trying to “see everything” and more about simply staying.
